After two long years, Cama-i has returned and KLA performed! With the help of the YK Diabetes Grant, we were able to purchase all the materials needed to make qaspeqs, dance fans, and drums. Special thank you to Nicholai Joekay for recommending us for the grant and walking us through the process. Also, we want to thank our night dorm parent, Venessa Yazzie, and parent, Marlis Fox, for donating their time to make the qaspeqs. Last, we want to thank Martina John and Maurice Nanalook for making the dance fans. Everything turned out beautifully. Getting ready for Cama-i was a community effort and our students were so very grateful for the opportunity.
Our students practiced every day after school for a month to get ready. This was no easy task because we have students from all over the YK Delta. It was nice to see our tundra students and our coastal students come together to select material to perform. Thank you to our site secretary, Brandi Martini, for taking time away from her family to give to our students to make this opportunity happen.
